It was found in the attic in an old wooden box of my mother's paper treasures. It was probably saved as a reminder of a time long, long ago when her eldest daughter graduated from high school. It seemed to be a perfect indicator of the times, fashions, decorating, and recipes of the day, and surely she would want that memory someday:) It was a "Good Housekeeping" Magazine dated April 1972.
The first bottle of nail polish I bought was Cutex. I remember it so clearly. It was a light pink. At the time there was not many companies who manufactured nail polishes, unlike today's world. Just walk into the local drugstore and you will see what I mean.
The blouses like this were the going trend, and most always in pastels. They looked perfect with the bell bottoms of the day, or the flared knee length skirts. I remember working tediously to get the bow tied just right.
The maternity fashions way back then. Yes my friends, this is the look I tried to copy when pregnant with my first daughter, and yes, the phone with the cord was exactly like I used to have some of my long, fun conversations with my friends. I never would have imagined a world of iphones, cell phones, texting, and ipads. In fact, I probably would have vowed that it was impossible to live in a world of communication like that. But, my collar of my dress would have been perfectly ironed, my dress would have had ample room to grow into, and I would have told you the phone cord did not hamper any fun in my life.
The "Cooking Magic" bags had just made their debut, supposedly adding real simplicity to the cooking and clean up process. Did any of you use these?
Really, was the record player a part of life then? A radio, stereo, and phono all in one. Imagine that! What a breakthrough!!! Think how many of these are sitting in attics across our country right now.
Only 39 brief years ago, life had such a different feel to it all. After graduation, I felt like a brand new world was about to open up to me, and truly it did. I honestly had to do the math twice, to convince myself that it really was true, it has been 39 years since that time.
For all of you who are graduating from high school or college this Spring, I offer you sincere Congratulations! As you venture on in whatever direction your life may take you, just remember that before you know it, 39 years will have past since this special occasion.
If you are a mother of a graduate, maybe you will want to put away a dated "Good Housekeeping" magazine for them to find in 39 years from now. My mother only had to pay .60 to do what she did. I am not sure what a " Good Housekeeping" magazine costs now, but I know for sure it is much more than .60. Makes one wonder what it will cost a mother to do this for their graduate 39 years from now.

Judy... what a FUN find! I remember those fashions! I think Cutex was the first bottle of nail polish I bought too!
And as you say, how quickly the years pass.
Enjoyed the Leigh Mitchell Hodges quote, and Jer 29:11 is one of my standing favorites!
I so remember all those things! And I had that exact radio/phonograph with me in my dorm room. Wish I still had it as I still have several LPs that were special to me. Wonder how many of today's high school grad know what is meant by "LP"?
I am getting Facebook and email reminders of the 40th LJHS class of 72 reunion coming up a year from now. Each time I read the notices my first thought is:
"Oh, the class twenty years ahead of my class must be planning their reunion. Gosh, those guys must be almost sixty by now..."
Then it registers that the notice is about MY class and WE are the ones who are almost 60. And a lot of my classmates are grandparents now. Some are probably even GREAT grandparents.
Well I think I will stop going to high school reunions and start just going to my grad school class reunions instead. It just sounds so much younger to be able to truthfully say I am going to my ten year class reunion instead! Ha! Another reason to go back for one's Masters degree after the kids leave home!
Great memories...and they all look rather familiar to me! How fun...that your mom saved that magazine of memories for you.
Thanks for reminding me how old I am!! ha! ha!
Hi Judy!
What wonderful memories! It seems like yeasterday doesn't it?
I know there's good in every era, but THAT era was the best! Give me my Madras Plaid shirt and a Paul Anka record any day.
