This past weekend, an adorable little blond haired girl finally had her birthday celebration.  You see, over the past few months, she helped sing "Happy Birthday" to her sister, her one brother, then her other brother, her dad, her mother...and all the while she kept wondering when it was her turn to have a birthday.

On Saturday, we celebrated her.  After all, it is a big deal to turn "3" years old.

The theme of the evening was cupcakes.

For her birthday cake, she requested a pink "Dora" cake, so that is what I made.  She was thrilled and took blowing out the candles quite seriously.  Love seeing the little guy in the corner taking in every detail.

A new little bicycle from her parents, brought a huge smile.  Suddenly she looks so grown-up.

But, the makeup kit that she received was also a big hit.  We covered the table with plastic and the two sisters were in their glory.  They have watched their grandma and mother applying makeup for years, and now it was their turn to pretend. 

So, together the four of us had our own beauty treatment session:)

Fortunately, the colors in the makeup kit were made just for children and the colors were kept to a minimum.  Quite carefully, the older sister applies the eyeshadow with the soft bristled brush, while I supervised.  I know for a fact, that I never touched a makeup brush until I was 13 or 14 years of age, but then I had never observed anyone applying makeup before then either.

After a while into our makeup session, the littliest one decided she was finished sharing her gift, and thus the tears on the face of the older one.  It sure is interesting how birthdays can bring out the best and the worst in people.  Sharing birthday gifts is a learning process in childhood.   Their mother has become quite accomplished in dealing with this type of situation, as I am sure she finds herself dealing with squabbles frequently. 

As all good, caring grandmas do, I came to the rescue of the older sister, and provided one of my own makeup kits for her to use, along with a mirror.  Together we sat and completed her beautifully done look, then cleaned off the makeup, and she headed outdoors to play with her siblings.  There will be plenty of time for makeup later in her life, but for the evening, it was fun pretending.
