Saturday afternoon...in the mountains...cool, clear, sunny weather...and great food! It was homemade chicken corn soup, made in a big, old, iron pot. Three large chickens were put in the pot at 7:00am. After hours of cooking, the chicken was taken off the bones, the freshly cut corn was added along with some seasoning...the soup was ready to be served by 2:00pm. Oh, my it was good. It was an old fashion picnic in the mountains, and it was memorable. We went with our dear friends, and they were invited by the host and his wife, because they are good friends.
This gentleman was in charge of the soup. The black iron instrument leaning against the pot of soup, was used to stir it so that it did not stick fast.
This pot of chicken corn soup was so delicious! Remember, like grandma used to make. Maybe because the surroundings were so beautiful...maybe that is why the soup tasted so good. Afterall, how rare is it that one gets to eat homemade soup made in an old iron pot.
In addition, the coffee was made in an old black iron coffee pot right over the fire.
This gentleman was in charge of making it, and serving it. We had the joy of sitting on lawn chairs around the fire, with the sun peeking down through the trees, drinking our coffee, and conversing with new friends. For my husband and I , this was one unusual and enjoyable Saturday afternoon. In our busy lives, living in an area with many people and activities...we were blessed to have this time away in God's beautiful creation.

I can imagine the soup tasted really good eaten in the fresh autumn air. That is one big pot of soup. This looks like a really nice way to spend a Saturday afternoon.
Oh that sounds to great. We used to cook fried chicken in a big pot like that when we lived in the country. It was our family reunion. All the chicken cookers are too old now and none of the young folks even know how to good fried chicken. Oh well time marches on.

This looks like a magical afternoon Judy with a delicious meal at the end of it!
That looks just like the type of gathering my husband's family has once or twice a year. His family will roast a whole hog though. It's a fun affair that lasts 24 hours for the cooks.
Your day looks like so much fun. The menu sounds delicious.
How special is that! I can almost taste it...the chicken soup and the coffee. A perfect fall outing!
This weather just makes ya want to eat soup, doesn't it?! Our family was talking about the gallons and gallons of soup we used to make for the farmshow. Glad to be out of that for now but we plan to make a large kettle of chicken corn soup this Saturday, just of us... and the working crew, of course - Yum! can't wait.
I was relaxed just reading this post. I'll bet that was some good coffee!
Oh wow, that sounds like fun! Quiet, great food, and your friends...what else could you ask for? Oh darn...I missed the apron give-away:( They (and you in yours) are just too cute!

PS I can't tell you how much your recent comments cheered me up:)
Gosh, I could feel as if I was right there and even feeling a little chilled too! That soup sounds wonderful, Judy...think I will try making some chicken corn soup as i have never done that before. Is there anything extra in it?
blessings and hugs,

p.s. For some strange reason your new posts are not showing up in my dashboard so I will investigate that and see if I can do anything as sometimes I forget to check my side bar on my blog page.
One of my favorite meals is homemade chicken soup! I was in the mood for some and made a big pot Sunday afternoon (I'm pleased I actually was able to accomplish that seeing how tired I was that day! Tee Hee!)
Everything about your Saturday afternoon sounds wonderful! I love hearing about how others are able to savor this lovely Fall season and to spend it with good friends is such a blessing!
Have a great day dear Judy! (Its actually snowing here today--hope it doesn't stick! So thankful we were able to get out yesterday!)
Blessings to You!

This sounds like such a fun afternoon. There is nothing like nice hot soup on a fall afternoon and especially served outside. I also like to take coffee outside in the fall and sip it while Charli and I swing. To have others to share with makes everything so much more wonderful doesn't it?
